Cooler temps refuting myth

From Marilyn Jegerlehner
Monroe

When it comes to Cap and Trade, Americans are not as ignorant as our legislators might wish!

As "global warming" proves fictional, those who would shackle the economy with taxes and regulations to fight mythology are thinking only of the riches they will derive at the expense of Americans who will be deluged with unnecessary taxes they can ill-afford.

June in Manhattan averaged 67.5 degrees Fahrenheit, 3.7 degrees below normal; the coldest average since 1958. The National Weather Service stated July 1: "The last time that Central Park hit 85 in May ... but not in June was back in 1903."

In Phoenix, June's high temperatures were below 100 degrees for 15 days straight, the first such June since 1913. In California's desert, Yucca Valley's June average was 83.5, 8.5 degrees below normal. Downtown Los Angeles averaged 74.5 degrees, five below normal.

Boston saw temperatures 4.7 degrees below normal. "This is the second coldest average high temp since 1872," veteran meteorologist and Weather Channel alumnus Joseph D'Aleo reports at Icecap.com. "It has been so cool and so cloudy that trees in northern New England are starting to show colors that normally first appear in September." Looking abroad, D'Aleo noted: "Southern Brazil had one of the coldest Junes in decades, and New Zealand has had unusual cold and snow again this year."

New Zealand's National Climate Center issued a June 2 news release headlined, "Temperature: Lowest Ever for May for Many Areas, Colder Than Normal for All."

The Earth's temperatures fall even as the planet spins within what global-warmists consider a thickening cloud of toxic carbon dioxide.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Earth System Research Laboratory at Mauna Loa, Hawaii, consistently and reliably has measured CO2 for the past 50 years. CO2 concentrations have risen steadily for a half-century.

For December 1958, the laboratory reported an atmospheric CO2 concentration of 314.67 parts per million (PPM). Flash forward to December 1998, about when global cooling reappeared. CO2 already had increased to 366.87 PPM. By December 2008, CO2 had advanced to 385.54 PPM, a significant 5.088 percent growth in one decade.

This capsizes the carbon-phobic global-warmist argument. For Earth's temperatures to sink while CO2 rises contradicts global warming as thoroughly as learning that firefighters can battle blazes by spraying them with gasoline.

Rex- Alarmists? What do you call yourself- no one can save the Earth? Are you Crazy? Every single person has the ability to make a positive impact instead of a negative one. If everyone made One positive change every day - or even one a month -Incredible improvements could be made - Just look at what the Don't litter campaign did for this country - or reducing emissions from cars- emissions have been and continue to be cut substantially from 20 years ago. How about the reductions in energy use - just by using energy saving light bulbs? Each of these started with 1 person and 1 idea and look at how far we have come!
Your attitude is Shockingly uninformed. YOU are exactly the kind of person that has gotten us into the mess we are in now... your attitude is appalling, disgusting and uninformed. Just because you feel helpless and don't want to put forth ANY efforts to make things better, or interfere with your selfish endeavors, or your laziness - does not mean there are not millions of people out there making a positive impact EVERY DAY.

I wonder how many "Happy Meal" toys from McDonalds have actually changed the dynamics of earth in the manufacturing (plastics/injection molding) and also in the throwing away of them into landfills. Human beings can't even to begin to tackle that, much less global "anything". That's why it's fun to expose and heckle the alarmists like some of you here for your apparent hysteria over global warming. You can't save the earth. No one can. You'll have to accept that you’ll sleep easier at night. I read a great (but horrifying) book once describing, for example, just the part covering birth rate/death rate in this world. As it stood 30 some years ago when the book was written, the author explained that even with wars, natural death, murder, or suicides, the birth rate outpaces dying people, leaving human beings totally populating every square foot of this earth eventually. I can't remember if it included bodies of water, though. He based his calculations on those times with simple math. He said it would take quite a while for real overpopulation to happen, but it would happen. I won't live to see it. Sound quacky? As long as people are alive and eating, drinking, sleeping, smoking, birthing, etc. YOU and Political HACKS over in Washington will never be able to stop the destruction of the earth. It does have a limited life only God knows when. Just a little something to REALLY think about folks.

Lets clear up some misconceptions that many of you have brought up. First- let's address the whole issue of Theories. A Theory is something (like an idea) that has been proven to be true many times over many years... It becomes a LAW if it holds true for MANY more years like Newtons laws (gravity).
Identifying something as a theory - tells us that it has been proven correct repeatedly- with actual hard evidence (something that can be measured and/or observed) like fossils or Darwin's Theory of Natural Selection. That's the second area we need to clear up. Darwin never used the term evolution - that was used by a journalist after the theory was first proposed Darwin's Theory had four central ideas:
1. Organisms produce more offspring than can survive
2. All organisms adapt to their environment
3. Those organisms with the best adaptations for a particular environment will survive and reproduce
4. Those offspring will become the majority of the population, and in turn reproduce
So as environments change- if an organism is going to survive - it must change or adapt to the new environment- That change - over time- IS evolution.
Like it or not- our environment (the Earth) is changing - whether we have (in part or whole) caused it, or its just a "cycle" the Earth is going through... any organisms that do not adapt to the changes - will cease to exist (become extinct)
There is no need to get personal - one of the great things about our country is that we can express our opinions freely without fear of punishment- it does not mean anyone has to agree with the opinions expressed! This brings up one final area: How do you tell the difference between an opinion and facts? Opinions have no evidence to back them up: they are often based on beliefs, gossip, hearsay, superstition, and/or lack of education or worldly knowledge - facts are backed up with hard, measurable, objective, observable evidence. "Junk Science" is- when pieces of actual scientific evidence or information are taken out of context and cobbled together to add validity to an opinion - often for political or financial gain. It's junk- but it sounds good and unfortunately people that lack the basic knowledge in that area - may be sucked in to believe it.

Mr. Luhman I have often thought many of the things you have said. My contention is, part of THAT survival of the fitest is for intelligent life to recognize, adapt, rectify. As far as "taxing" people into better behavior. Once again I quote one of the favorite sons of the conservative movement, the late Paul Harvey, who said, many, many times over decades, "Self Government, without Self Discipline Does NOT work". We are a society void of self discipline, we care not as a whole about anything other than that which brings personal satisfaction. Of course someone who gets extreme joy from partaking in activities that use high amounts of fossil fuel, polluting, increasing demand on fossil fuels,, of course they will not admit any adverse consequences, that would require a change in action. Humans are taxed into complience, because most will not comply voluntarily. in 1941, most in this country actually did have a "Country first" attitude, a united effort to win the war. Most, willingly, made sacrifice, but even then, the Government had to ration things like fuel, why? because not enough people were willing to make sacrifice without being told they had to. But even that, is something you will never see today, my parents, and grand parents and anyone else living during that time, took great pride in the united effort, the personal sacrifices all had to make for the war effort. Today, if such rations were ordered, the next day our courts would be filled with law suits and the ACLU trying to get an injunction. "Self government without self discipline does not work.

Article comment by: Gary Luhman (INFORMED SKEPTIC)

There is quite a bit of irony in the ongoing debate about global warming, er global climate change. As an informed skeptic, I can accept the “fact” that average global temperatures have increased significantly over the last two centuries. The impact of increased temperatures have been a great benefit to the human race – arguably at the expense of many other species upon the Earth. 200 years ago there were about ONE BILLION people on the Earth and 95% were engaged in farming – most at a slightly above-subsistence level. Yet, the fact that global temperatures have been increasing does NOT prove that the sole or even the primary cause is “man-made”. At best, the impact of increasing CO2 emissions is a contributing factor to global climate change. Other “natural factors”, including increased solar output and volcanic activity (or inactivity) have contributed as much or more to global climate change – both in the short and long term. Global Warming advocates, like proponents of Darwin’s Evolution Theory tend to ignore the impact of natural phenomena, that would tend to discredit their “theories” even when the evidence is literally shining in their faces or blowing smoke up their pants.

It is particularly ironic that this global climate change blog in the Monroe Times quickly digressed into a discussion about Evolution. Since Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species in 1859, the debate over the earth’s origins and “evolution” has raged. Darwin’s theory (and it is just a theory, never conclusively proved) is that the vast array of animal and plant species upon the Earth evolved over millions of years through an immeasurable series of small mutations and genetic adaptions, resulting in the “Survival of the Fittest”. It is ironic indeed that the same folks who advocate so strongly for “global climate change” theory have this great sense of urgency to “do something about it” when “generally accepted evolutionary theory" would predict that the strongest and fittest of the Earth's species will simply adapt to the coming warmer temperatures and higher CO2 levels that global warming will inevitably bring. But NO, evolutionary theory cannot solve the “problem” of man-made global climate change, only MAN with his intelligent plans and designs to limit CO2 emissions through a costly, regressive, confiscatory tax on human consumption can save the Earth from utter destruction and devastation. IRONIC INDEED!!!

The World Meteorological Organization says cold weather does not mean that global warming has abated. WMO says people should not confuse weather with climate.

People in Europe are shivering, while people in North Asia and parts of Australia are sweltering. Scientists say these weather extremes are to be expected and neither phenomenon can be used as a case for or against global warming.

Michel Jarraud
Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, Michel Jarraud, says people should not confuse local weather variability with climate change.

Just because people in Geneva and elsewhere in Europe are shivering does not mean global warming has stopped. He says the trend toward global warming is still there.

Captian Kook AKA: Kirk. Writes Global warming is junk "science". It is about as real as the theory of evolution. It ranks up there with the theory of BigFoot, the Loch Ness monster, etc. Then ends the letter with "God Bless You" Don't make much sense to me. You want facts. The Church has killed milloins of people. Witch hunts, and wars due to beleive in my god over yours. I wish I could turn off religion with a light switch so all could move forward.

Well, there is actually scientific means to look at hundreds of thousands of years. It is called: ICE CORE SAMPLING. (It's also amazing how we can read millions of years back with geological formations).

People should also consider that the ocean and world temperatures have only been recorded for a relatively short period of time, given the age of the earth. Also, for air temperatures, it has been shown that as many as 60% of weather reporting stations are improperly located, i.e. on blacktopped parking lots etc. Thank you Wondering for giving facts though, but when you say EVER, you really only mean recently. People should look at the facts and then put them in context. This is the danger of taking facts at face value. It might be helpful to look at the temperature cycles throughout the last million years or so. Again thanks for the facts, but people should also look deeper into what they really mean.

For those who are interested in facts and not kool-aid drinking right or left wing rhetoric, this fact was released this week, by an international group of scientists. June was the warmest month EVER recorded, world wide for oceanic temperatures. 70% of the Earth is covered by water and water temps have much more bearing on the over all temp of the earth than air temps. The Warmest month ever recorded for average oceanic temps. Now, this is a fact, you will notice I give no interpretation of the fact, what or if it means anything, but it is an irrefutable fact.

Rex, where did I pledge support for Obama's health care plan? My only point was that science has shown evidence in support of many things like evolution, and that it has yet to show conclusive results for others, like global climate change.
The idea that because there is good and evil in the world does not prove the existence of God. It only proves that there are good and evil people in the world. People do both in the name of religion and others do both in the absence of religion. Because there is no proof of God does not mean that one doesn't exist, I personally think one does. But there can be religion in science, and I think the two are intimately linked. The problem is that some religions or sects refuse to adapt their views on the world.

So Rex please don't put words in my mouth, I never supported Obama's initiative on health care. To reiterate, my only point is that science is a tool that can help explain the world and should only be used as an argument if it the facts are fully understood. which in this case they are not because people have taken sides on a subject that the jury is still out on.

JRH: "And since when does society have the right to kill the people that it, we have given up on."

Well "JRH" Obama's health care plan proposes to do just that. The old, infirm, etc. will be judged fit or unfit to be treated with this Liberal Government's new health dogma. Oh, and by the way, the United States uses our tax dollars everyday to fund abortions for the unborn. Now, if all of that isn't great evidence to prove that God exists and evil is real, because certainly, if evil exists, then its counterpart, goodness and holiness exists as well. Believe me the human race has the bloodiest hands. Also, your precious science also created the atomic bomb. Ahhh, contradictions!! Science has its “worshippers” too “JRH”! It takes faith to believe in either position.

Kirk, evolution is based on science, therefore there are facts to back it up. But this is probably news to you because you haven't taken a real science course since high school. There are many cases in which there is strong evidence to support evolution and it is the model that best describes the world we live in. Science does not prove anything, it only provides evidence in support of a theory. Either it is your ignorance or your church, mosque, or temple did a good job of brainwashing you. There is evidence for evolution and absolutely none for creationism. I also realize that arguing with you is fruitless because there is no reasoning with religious zealots who are determined to make this world a worse place.

Secondly, I watch BBC when I watch cable news, or most of the time I read online.

And since when does society have the right to kill the people that it, we have given up on. You forgot to go after stem cell research in your rant, you know the hard science that has the potential to save millions of people. You know the area in which conservatives have held us back for 8 years because aborted fetuses were used.

Religion must begin to "evolve" as well, since it is a man made phenomenon with no credible basis. It's not the middle ages anymore when we had no idea how the world worked, but now we have some idea, and religion is standing in the way of progress.
