Get Your Green On: St. Patrick's Day Events in Monroe

Mary Jane Grenzow

St. Patrick's Day is Monday, March 17. Here are local St. Patrick's Day events that are planned:

• New this year is a pub crawl sponsored by Flanagan's Shenanigans. The event will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 15, with sign-up starting at noon.

Participants in the event will walk from Turner Hall to Bullet's, then Old Smokey's, Friendly Inn and then Flan's at 4 p.m. when prizes will be distributed. Everyone on the crawl will get one tap beer at each establishment, as well as a long-sleeved T-shirt.

"It's a fun event," said Veronica Bruce, who is helping organize St. Pat's Day events through Monroe Main Street.

Participants must be 21 years old. Pre-registration ends March 8 to guarantee shirt size, but participants also can register the day of the event. The cost is $15.

• Also that night, The Roadhouse will sponsor a St. Pat's Day benefit for the Green County Humane Society, with a portion of proceeds going to the animal shelter.

• The Monroe Public Library's Children's Room will be having St. Pat's Day activities from 3 to 4:45 p.m. in the second-floor meeting room. There will be crafts and stories. Children can make a St. Pat's Day hat and join the Library Clan in the parade if they choose.

• The St. Patrick's Day parade, billed as Gathering of the Clans 2, will begin at 5:17 p.m. Monday, March 17. "We're trying to get families involved," Bruce said, but anyone interested in joining in the parade is welcome to participate - even Irish "wanna-bees." Organizations that would like to be in the parade can call Bruce or Tracy Hamiliton at 328-4404 to pre-register and allow organizers time to arrange the parade lineup. But, they also can show up the day of the event. "We'll fit them in," Bruce said.

There is no cost to join the parade, which is sponsored by Monroe Main Street. Wearing green is encouraged, but "we have no restrictions," she said.

Lining up for the parade begins at 4:30 p.m. in the parking lot in front of Monroe Middle School.
